MobileMe’s days are numbered, and many of you have been inquiring about what will be happening to your website. Plain and simple, you need a new web host. My advice to you is don’t procrastinate, get this done as soon as possible. You will be thankful you did later on. Here is a quick video tutorial that will show you how to transfer your site from MobileMe to a real web hosting company. If anyone has any further questions, just let me know and I will do my best to help out.

As we inch closer and closer to the final days of MobileMe, many iWeb users should now be looking for a real hosting company to host their websites for them. In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to easily move your website from MobileMe to a real web host.

The first thing you will need to do is sign up for hosting. To do this, go to ragesw.com and click on Web Hosting. Then click on the Sign Up Now button. In this first step, you can either register a new domain name if you do not already have one, or you can transfer your domain over to RAGE Web Hosting. If you are not familiar with what a domain is, google.com, and apple.com are both domains.

So if you want to register a new domain, type in the name in the first box under the Register a new domain option. You can also select the extension for the domain by clicking on this drop down menu.

If you are transferring a domain, click on the second option to transfer existing domain to RAGE Web Hosting and  type in your domain. When you are all done, click the Click to Continue button. You should see the domain you typed, and the Status reading Available. Then click the Click to Continue button.

On the next page, you will see some information about the services you will be getting. The drop down menu next to Billing Cycle will allow you to select how long you want to sign up to hosting for.

You can read through the remaining configurable options and check off anything else that you want to add to your order. When you are done, click on the Update Cart button.

On the next page, you will need to enter your EPP code. An EPP code, or authorization code, is a security code that verifies that you are the actual owner of the domain you are trying to transfer.

You can obtain this code by logging into your account where you purchased your domain from. You should be able to find the code by browsing around, or you can e-mail your current registrar and ask them to give you the code, and to also unlock your domain so you can transfer it.

Once you obtain the code, simply key it in and click on Update Cart. From there you will be able to checkout and order your hosting.

A few notes on some of the things I just mentioned. Firstly, I didn’t show the process for people who are just buying a new domain. That is because it is very straight forward and you won’t need any help with it. Second, if you are having trouble obtaining your EPP code, you can just e-mail RAGE Web Hosting and they will help you get it.

After you have signed up, you will receive your signup e-mails from RAGE Web Hosting. In one of those e-mails, you will see an e-mail that looks similar to this one. These are the FTP login details. All we need to do with these is plug them into the corresponding fields on the iWeb publish page. It’s always a good idea to click the Test Connection button to ensure you copied and pasted everything correctly. If you transferred your domain, make sure to follow the instructions in the Domain Name Details section of the e-mail, as you will need to update your name servers to indicate that RAGE Web Hosting is hosting your site as well as housing it.

And that’s it. Once you publish your site, you can then visit your website on your new web host.

Will I be able to use iweb to continue building my site and the other 5 I am in charge of? If I need to rebuild, can you suggest a program and the easiest way to transfer? UGGGGG!!!!!!!! Thank you for all your insights!

I had iWeb using Snow Leopard, Lion and now Mountain Lion and it works just fine. If you get new Apple with Mountain Lion installed you’ll be fine but not so if you get a Windows machine (why would you?).

Yes you will still be able to use iWeb and continued building all those sites.

You don’t need to change to a different website builder. If you have iWeb on your computer, you will be able to continue to use it,

If you are getting your new computer soon, you can still use iWeb. I think you just need to buy the iLife disc which should contain iWeb on it.

    Hi folks,

    Hi Jeremy,

I’m new to iWeb and would like to build a website for a business client who doesn’t need all the bells and whistles of a CMS site. I’d like to know what the future of iWeb is? Are Apple continuing to support iWeb and do updates, or is it basically out of production?

My client only needs a basic site which I can do easily in iWeb, and at half the cost (for him) of a CMS site.

Any advice would be appreciated, as I don’t want to build the site, then find out I have to build a new one in 6 months time if iWeb ceases to exist.

Apple is most likely not going to update iWeb, BUT this doesn’t mean that it ceases to exist. You will still be able to use iWeb as long as you have it on your computer. You can buy a new computer in one year, and while iWeb won’t be on it, you will most likely still be able to install iWeb. So I would say use iWeb if it makes sense for you. Read some of this blog’s latest posts to learn more about iWeb and how to make a good business website. Ask questions whenever they arise. Good luck!

    Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your reply. It gives me the confidence to at least forge ahead with iWeb. My client will only need to amend the site two or three times a years, so this should work well.

    Cheers
    Peter

    OT
Wondering: if I have several links on different pages going to a unique page, is it possible to add a button/link going back to the page I came from? Not using the browser Back button of course.
Thanks for your tips. For your time. for your patience.
    Ciao!

Hi Jeremy, I love your website! I have already set up a different host for my iweb sites but I am concerned about all of the links that I have used to my mobileme galleries. Do you have a suggestion for a good photo manager that I can link my web page photo galleries to? By the way, what will Apple do with iphoto and its feature to share photos on a mobileme gallery?
    Thanks, Dave

    • Jeremy 15 May, 2012 at 19:37 Reply

I would just create the galleries in iPhoto and then display them in a photo galleries page using iWeb.

That feature will just be taken out of iPhoto when MobileMe is done (if it has not been taken out already. I’m using an older version so I’m not totally sure).

I have recently wiped my macbook to install Lion and in the process have managed to lose all of my websites from the left hand navi bar in iWeb. They are still in my iDisk/web folder, but how can i import them so i can continue editing them!

Possibly a really silly question… but need help!

I’m struggling to transfer my site over to a new host. All the guide videos I’ve seen have a ‘site publishing settings’ page on the title of the website in the sidebar. Mine just shows a blank page.
Also I liked the simplicity of just clicking ‘publish’ when I had made a change. Can this be set up so that it directs the update to the right place?
    Thanks

    Hi Jeremy,

I have signed up to use GoDaddy as a host for a website I built on iWeb9 for the MobileMe close down. However now that I’ve changed to a new host, I’m still being forwarded to the MobileMe is closed site whenever I try to login to my site. The checks say they are successful, as is the upload. I believe that I’ve made all the needed changes to FTP so why is the site still being directed to MobileMe?

    Many thanks
    Julia

      Julia, hi!

I have the same problem. Uploaded to GoDaddy, everything successfully, but “www.mypage.com” goes to MobileMe. If I type “mypage.com” without “www” the page is found! But nobody from my visitors know this…

Anybody knows what is going on?

      Thanx, Rasto

    Jeremy:

I have used the HTML snippet to for the loss of Googe Maps.
    It works.
However, if I touch the map to move or enlarge the FULL html code appears over the top of it.

How do I hide the html code from the visitor ?

    Thanks for your time.
