New iWeb ’09!

January 6th 2009 Apple officially announced iWeb’09 and what does that mean to us?  A whole bunch more features that makes making websites super easy.  I personally don’t have a copy yet (Jan 7th 2009), but have already pre-ordered it and am ready to push iWeb with the new ’09.  I went through Apple’s website on the new features of iWeb and watch the videos and here’s what new goodness I have gathered:


  1. •2 New themes (I expected more, but we could get more in an update, do you remember when iWeb 1.1 came out?  They added 6 more themes, so it could happen.

  2. •More built in Widgets them being:

  3. •MobileMe Gallery

  4. •You Tube (new)

  5. •Google Maps

  6. •Google AdSense

  7. •iSight Photo (new)

  8. •iSight Video (new)

  9. •Countdown (new)

  10. •RSS Feed (new)

  11. •HTML Snippet

  12. •FTP Publishing!  We can finally choose which site publishes where.  Either MobileMe, FTP, or Local Folder. 

  13. •Media Browser Window is now built in to the window interface, rather than a floating window

  14. •Some prettier icons on the bottom toolbar which now extends all the way across over the left page listing sidebar.

  15. •Nofify Facebook when publishing


So those are some of the updates/improvments made to iWeb.  There are still some features I was hoping would get into this update that didn’t such as:

  1. •Master Pages (just like in Keynote) so you don’t have to change everypage when you want to make a big interface change

  2. •Built in forms

  3. •More widgets like iFrames, Flash Embed, etc.

  4. •More interactive/user generated access

  5. •More page layout templates

  6. •Integrated Flash into iWeb

  7. •The ability to add an html snippet to the head part of your page rather than only the body

  8. •Add Meta-Tag Keywords

  9. •Add Favicon

  10. •etc.


I did download the trial version of iWork ’09 and there are some great improvments to the inspector that I hope was carried across to iWeb.  Such as a more advanced gradient adjustor in the graphic inspector, more line options rather than just dotted and solid and more.  I also hope they finally added grouping and the pen tool into iWeb. 


So with all these things I guess we’ll just find out at the end of this month what it has and doesn’t have and hope that in some not to far distant update we’ll get some of the features we are hoping for.  I’ll update this page once I get the new iWeb and have time to go through it and I’ll let you know what features made the cut.  Thanks for reading.
